The Karmapa is one of the most important holders of the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism.
His present reincarnation, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, Trinley Thaye Dorje, was born in Lhasa (Tibet) in 1983. In 1994 the young Karmapa finally fled Tibet. On March 17th, 1994, the Künzig Shamarpa officially declared him to be the authentic reincarnation of the 16th Karmapa and welcomed the then eleven-year old in New Delhi (India) and introduced him to the public as the 17th Holder of the Black Crown, Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje.Since then the Gyalwa Karmapa has lived in India, where he has undergone a rigorous spiritual training.
His education has covered the entire field of Buddhism in theory and practice. In the year 2003 the title of a Vajradhara was bestowed upon the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa by his main teacher, Künzig Shamarpa, to mark the formal completion of his monastic education in the sutras and tantras and his mastery of all aspects of the teachings of the profound lineage. Since then he has continued to deepen his own training in Buddhism. In addition, the Gyalwa Karmapa frequently travels to Europe, Southeast Asia and the USA to give guidance to his disciples on the Buddhist path.

In February 2011 His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje visited Hong Kong for the second time.
Gya
lwa Karmapa’s official programme in Hong Kong ended with two sessions of teaching on the topic “What is Buddhism?” which were attended by more than 1,500 devotees from over the world.
He started out with a general presentation of the topic, but soon invited his audience to share any questions and comments they might have, emphasising that a two-way exchange was usually more fruitful and interesting than a traditional one-way teaching.
The audience made ample use of this invitation, and a lively exchange on a large variety of topics ensued.
Given the diversity of subjects addressed, the DVD menu offers the possibility to select questions by topic.
