At the request of the Buddhist Society of India in conjunction with the Friends in Dhamma (an association that seeks communal activity amongst the many schools of Buddhism throughout the world), His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje presided as the Chief Guest in a conference to discuss “The Relevance of Buddhism in the Present World”.
Guru Purnima is a festival traditionally celebrated by Buddhists and Hindus.
It is a particularly propitious day for offering puja and paying respect to one’s guru (spiritual guide). Guru Purnima falls on the day of the full moon in the month of Ashadh (June–July) of the Shaka Samvat, the Indian national calendar.
Buddhists celebrate this day in honour of the greatest of Buddhist teachers, Lord Buddha himself, who gave his first sermon on this day at Sarnath near Varanassi.

According to the Tibetan calendar, it was on the 15th day of the fourth lunar month more than 2,500 years ago that Prince Siddharta was born, and it was on that same day 35 years later that he attained perfect enlightenment and became Buddha Shakyamuni.
After turning the Dharma wheel for 45 years, it was once more on the full-moon day of the fourth month that Buddha Shakyamuni entered Parinirvana. Therefore, this day, which commemorates three major events in Buddha’s life, is the most sacred day for Buddhists over the world.
This year Buddha Purnima, or Saga Dawa in Tibetan, fell on 15th of June. His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje was invited as the Chief Guest to the Saga Dawa Festival, organized by Friends in Dhamma and held at the National Museum in New Delhi, India.
Dear dharma friends,
It is with profound regret and heartfelt sorrow that I have been following the tragic developments resulting from the disastrous earthquake in Japan. The tragedy has cost thousands of lives already and countless people are still missing, not to mention all those who have lost the very basis of their existence. The long-term consequences of this catastrophe are as yet incalculable.
Apart from extending material help to them, what we as dharma practitioners can do is support the victims of the disaster by dedicating our practice, prayers and merit to them.
Therefore, I will extend my prayers and wishes to both the deceased and the bereaved, and I request all of you to do the same.
In particular, I would like to ask you to focus on the six-syllable mantra of Chenresig and to accumulate as many of these mantras as possible for their sake.
With prayers,
Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje

A five-day programme of teachings and initiations with Gyalwa Karmapa, complemented by teachings given by his private tutor, Prof. Sempa Dorje, as well as by Khenpo Tsering, marked the end of this year’s K.I.B.I. course.
The holy site of the Mahabodhi Temple was at its most splendid on the morning of the opening day of this year’s Kagyu Monlam. Thangkas depicting the masters of the Kagyu lineage had been put up on the Monlam shrine, and in front of them countless flower garlands, bouquets of flowers and butter lamps had been arranged, and a vast number of elaborately manufactured offering tormas set out. Every surface was covered with flowers laid out in intricate patterns, and a mood of joyful anticipation was in the air.
